Do You Have Time For a Pet?

Many people underestimate the commitment it takes to own a pet. Dogs need to be fed, groomed, walked, and trained on a consistent schedule. Cats can often require as much attention as dogs.

Even with a busy work schedule and personal life, it is still possible to allocate time for your pet. Try to incorporate these changes to your schedule to make time for your furry companion:

PetFirst Tip
Evaluate your lifestyle before adopting a pet to ensure you have room physically and emotionally for a furry friend.

  • Get up 30 minutes early to walk and feed your dog. This is a good way to spend time with them while getting some exercise.
  • Check on your pets during lunch. Especially with a new puppy or kitten, try to come home during your break to check up on him or her and let them outside to use the bathroom.
  • Come straight home after work to feed them dinner and get some exercise. Even if you have evening plans, make time to go home and give your pet several minutes of attention.
  • Keep a schedule. Like their owners, dogs and cats abide by a schedule and prefer consistency when it comes to feedings, playtime and bathroom breaks.

If your schedule seems too cramped to spend the necessary time with your pet, there are other options to consider. Older dogs and cats are significantly less time consuming than puppies or kittens because they don’t require as much training or exercise time. Older pets still need to be on a regular feeding schedule. There are also numerous pet day care and pet-walking services available in most cities.
