PetFirst partners
with Kroger to offer pet insurance

- Shoppers at Kroger grocery stores can now pick up health-insurance coverage for
their beloved dog or cat, in addition to bread and milk. PetFirst Healthcare
LLC recently launched a partnership to offer pet insurance through the Kroger
Co., the nation's third-largest retailer.
PetFirst insurance covers routine care and medical procedures for dogs and
cats, and is now marketed on shelves, at the checkout or at the service desk of
more than 2,200 stores in the Kroger family. Kroger operates several grocery
banners, including City Market, Dillon's, Fred Meyer, Frye's, Gerbes, Hilander,
JayC, King Sooper, Owen's, Pay Less, QFC, Ralph's and Smith's.
"We want to educate people that pet insurance can be a simple and affordable
way to protect your family friend," said Brent Hinton, PetFirst chief executive
officer, and former head of the Kentucky Humane Society. "Through our retail
partnership with Kroger, that information is right in front of people."
The pet insurance offering is part of a suite of financial-services products
provided by Kroger Personal Finance.
PetFirst will cover routine pet expenses such as annual exams, prescription
flea control, behavior training, spay/neuter services, diagnostics, heartworm
protection, teeth cleanings and vaccinations, as well as surgeries, x-rays or
hospitalization that result from illness or injury. Pet owners can recoup up to
90 percent of veterinary costs through PetFirst and those savings can add up
fast, considering many of today's veterinary care costs hundreds and sometimes
thousands of dollars for complicated procedures such as hip replacement, kidney
transplant or cancer treatment.
PetFirst premiums do not fluctuate with a pet's age or breed, and Family Plans
are available for households with multiple pets. Claims are generally paid in
less than two weeks.
